The Corned Beef face off – a meaty corned beef, with no chemical after taste.

I am a self-confessed meat/beef lover. I love that char and meaty taste of meat; that I crave for steak once a week or even twice and when I do, I always go for the Angus beef. The other day, I saw a post on a local Facebook group asking “mga pare” — what is your favorite corned beef brand? Then I came across 2 brands, Brand X – was highly praised, because its something they have been enjoying since their childhood and then theres Brand – Y  which was praised for its beefy taste but they said it has too much “Sabaw”.

I got curious on these 2 brands; so I bought and tried both and did a basic cook-off.

Brand X –  for brand X, this is the brand that is known because  of the name recall and because we grew up knowing it. Some of the “mag pares” said this is their favorite because it reminds them of their childhood and their moms cooking. Some commented that they like this brand because of the taste.

Brand Y – Highlands Gold Corned Beef –  The label, it says “made with Angus Beef and 100% Pure Beef.” I checked their website and read online that Highlands Beef is made from imported Angus Beef. For those of you who are not familiar with Angus Beef, Angus has better marbling than ordinary beef- meaning better taste, texture and moisture, this must be the reason why most comment mentioned that the product is “masabaw”. BUT — if your a real meat lover/eater you’ll know that juice is important. When eating meat it best to let the meat rest before serving. WHY? because we want the meat to absorb the juice back so we can have that juicy meat. I think thats the reason why this one has more juicier.

Both brands has easy to open cans, making it easier to open. Brand X cost about P89.75 and Highlands Gold Corned Beef cost about P87.50. Upon opening the can, I noticed a difference in color. Brand X is a bit pale compared to Highlands Angus Corned beef.

I gave the Highlands Gold Corned Beef a try and cooked it the old fashion way adding garlic and onions only. As you can see from the can, you see more meaty strips than the other brands. To address the juice, I cooked my corned beef for (more or less) 7 mins. I let the liquid cook more. I think they want you to let the meats absorb the liquid back.

I also notice that this particular brand has no “litid” on its mix.

Brand X –

Brand X –

I noticed that Brand X has smaller bits compared to Highlands. As you can see in the video when I poured it in. I also, cooked it using garlic and onions only. Here’s the verdict.

Brand X -So, I gave it a try… personally, I find the mix of this corned beef taste heavy on the “salitre” taste. Im not so sure of the term to use because for one I’m not a food tech. It’s just that it has this chemical taste that is so strong for me.

Brand Y – Highlands Gold Corned Beef – for the brand Y, I do agree with them that this has a lot of juice – liquid but once you cook it a little longer that liquid will go back to the meat itself. As for the taste, I love it. It has that beefy taste that I like and none of that chemical after taste that I did not like with the Brand X.

We often picked brands because we are used to it, but it won’t hurt if you could try a new brand once in awhile and not regret the choice. Over all I give Highland Gold Angus Corned Beef a thumbs-up and a #mamachowsapproved seal. I can assure you, you won’t regret it.

My finish product! Gold Seas Tuna Speherd's Pie.Read more

I spent one whole afternoon cooking healthy and delicious food. Healthy because the main ingredient is Tuna and delicious because the recipes are from Chef Rosebud.

Me with Chef Rosebud.
Me with Chef Rosebud.

So how did that afternoon go? The invitation was from 2pm to 5pm. I arrived at the venue The Cookery Place around 1245. I know I was so early because, I took an Uber and I was excited.hehehe! but seriously I wasn’t sure where the venue was and how long Uber would take for me to go the venue. So, I went up around 1pm and meet with Chef Rosebud. I have known Chef Rosebud for quite a time now, thru Instagram. I think I can comfortably call her my Instagram buddy. hehehe. It was our first time to meet each other personally. Usually, we just exchange conversation thru IG of thru text I almost meet her during the launch but did not catch her on time.  Our small chitchat was always about our kids, lactation pastries, her healthy (diet) food meals for delivery and my weight lost and wellness journey. It was a good chat actually I learned something much more personal about Chef Rosebud.

The Girls of Gold Seas Tuna
Me with the girls of Gold Seas Tuna, thanks for having me.

Then 2pm came and I again meet someone familiar to me. This time its a co-mom that I follow thru IG. It was Michelle of Momfriday.com. Its my first time to meet with her too. Gosh, she’s so tall! hehehe. Michelle, has been encouraging me to try pilates. She even invited me to join her in a class. I guess I need more guts before I can go wth her. She’s a pro in pilates. hehehe.

then came another mom that I know— A mom that I often work with. Its no other than mommy Ginger or MommyGinger.com blog. Ginger and I have know each other for years. I have been sponsoring her events related to moms and family. It was so nice to see her again. We usually just talk thru FB or email. hehehe. We were also joined by 2 other moms namely Frances of the Topaz Horizon Blog and Shari of The Misty Mom.
